Great article.

See the excellent 'Events in Ukraine" Substack for some fascinating breakdowns and insights into SBU stewardship of Ukrainian scam call centers, neo-Nazi groups in Ukraine and Russia, terror cells, likely FSB double-agents and whatnot.

This will keep you up at night. In addition to teens being employed, cartels could employ drug users, homeless people. Even pensioners. You will never know who is providing information to whom. This may further divide an already divided and suspicious population and media will capitalize on it.

Very thought provoking essay, Mike. You have hit on another aspect of the asymmetric aspect of modern warfare—crowdsourced intelligence, and focused on how state operatives recruit kids for cash for intel gathering.

Really the only countermeasures are physically separating target assets and hiding them.

Like the title of your report, gray man/gray home, gray car, all fortified. And good fences with gate operators, usually closed. And motion triggered video capture covering the property—helping to identify ground based threats.

For drone detection, perhaps a combination of audio sensors and rf sensors could be developed to alert of their intrusion.

But the reality is missiles are expensive that are capable of penetrating structures—they won’t be widely deployed. What do you know about the ordinance that small drones are capable of carrying and firing? That would help assess the level of countermeasures needed to protect life and property.
